The Dumfries Retailers Association is proud to present Dumfries in this brand new web site dedicated to all that Dumfries has to offer our visitors, our residents and our local entrepreneurs. In the coming weeks www.dumfriesnow.com will be featuring all that Dumfries Town Centre has to offer, from Shops, Cafes, Restaurants, Bars, Services, Entertainment, Places to Stay and much more. We would like thank you for visiting our site and hope you will visit us regularly here at www.dumfriesnow.com during 2010.

Dumfries known as 'Queen Of The South' like it's football team, is the largest town in south-west Scotland and being sited on the River Nith, a former major seaport. The town became a Royal Burgh in 1186 although only officially becoming part of Scotland in 1234.

Dumfries is also a great place to do business and be in business with a wide range of opportunities for the entrepreneur. Links to a selection of some excellent business premises in prime locations around the Town will be available. With the help of the DRA, new business start-ups can be assured that our focus is on the future success of Dumfries as it continues to adapt to the changing face of southern Scotland.

As many of the traditional industries have declined, Dumfries has shown the willingness and ability to attract new businesses and a retail offer that includes many high street majors as well as retaining a good compliment of local shops within the town centre.

Dumfries - In the Past
!

Robert Burns lived in Dumfries before his death in 1796 and his house still contains personal possessions. The Robert Burns Centre recalls his years in Dumfries and his mausoleum is in St. Michael’s churchyard.

Mid Steeple in the centre of Dumfries was built in 1707 as courthouse and prison. Devorgilla Bridge dating back to 1432 is oldest of five across River Nith, and a converted 18th century Windmill contains camera obscura and local history museum.

Robert the Bruce began his rebellion against the Edward I and the English at Dumfries by capturing the castle in 1306, leading to the Wars of Independence.

DUMFRIES TOWN CENTRE RADIOLINK SYSTEM

Nortech Radio operates a shop link radio system which is monitored by CCTV operators from Loreburn Street Police Office, Dumfries under the banner of Dumfries Tradesafe partnership.

The intention of the system is to reduce crime by allowing retail staff to work together by means of radio communication, and also to have a direct link to the CCTV staff that operate the town centre cameras, and Police should they require assistance.

Radio units are available to purchase or hire from Nortech Radio, and Nortech advise that should retailers choose the hire option, the entire monthly cost of the radio hire can be offset against your tax liability – thus effectively making the radio free of charge.  A similar, but slightly reduced benefit in kind can be obtained, by the hire of a Nortech radio.

All retailers are encouraged by Police to join the Radiolink scheme, as through improved communication we can reduce crime and increase your profits.  In addition to this benefit, Police circulate members of the Radiolink system with photographs of those shoplifters who are active within Dumfries, which helps your staff identify troublesome individuals in future.

Should you require any further information regarding Radiolink, please make contact Constable Sam Ewart or Adam Potts on 0845 600 5701.  They will be happy to help.
