Dumfries lies astride the River Nith, one of southern Scotland's major rivers. To the east of Dumfries is the beautiful Solway Firth which seperates Cumbria from Galloway. Because of its proximity to the border Dumfries is the first major town of Scotland easily acessible from the main artery routes from South. 

Dumfries itself is an important staging post on the main A75 euroroute linking the UK mainland with Ireland offering as it does an wide range of welcome facilities for the traveller. Dumfries also serves as a major hub from which all areas of Galloway are easily accessible making it an ideal base from which to explore the unspoilt majestic beauty of the 'hidden gem' that is southwest Scotland.
